Beavers Winter Walks 2022

Over the weekend of the 5th and 6th of February the Beaver team held winter walks at Brockhill County Park and Lullingstone Country Park for over 100 Beavers who had a great time at our first event since Scouting restarted.

This is the write up that was sent from Romney to their local paper.

Beavers Put the OUT back into ScOUTing!

Organised by Kent County Beaver Team, they joined in and signed up wholeheartedly to the activities on offer. The aim was to have fun, spread the message about conservation and the importance of looking after the natural environment.

They found out what the job of a Ranger is – to look after animals, the environment and people making sure we all keep safe and look out for each other – working as a Team, just like the Beavers!

They learned about hedgehogs and how the the average one had between 5 and 7K spines? Hibernation is a fascinating topic – sleeping all through the winter snug and warm but missing possible snow and all the excitement of Christmas – not for our Beavers!!

Beavers made their own hedgehog souvenirs from clay and decorated them with natural items scavenged from the Park, learning how to use a bow saw to cut the bases. Next on the Funlist, den building, using tarpaulins, paracord and scavenged woodland items followed by the water test – were the shelters waterproof? That’s always a hit trying to avoid or trying to actually get wet!!

Then, the all-important toasted Marshmallows around the Campfire, always a favourite – fire and food!

Finally a new challenge for us all, Geo caching – the Beavers were probably better at this than the Leaders, they were more adept at using the hand held devices and spotting clues!! It was great fun, they loved hiding in the spooky Hollow Oak Tree in the middle of the park.

The smiles on the faces of all the Beavers and the Leaders said it all!!!

Verdict – We had a brilliant time, it went so quickly, I love the hedgehogs, the marshmallows were scrummy. . . . . praise all the way for Kent County Beaver Leaders Debby, Jean, Melvin and the Ranger Team at Brockhill Park.
