Howl
3,700 Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers and Leaders descended on Howletts during the weekend of 31st March and 1st April.
The county teams all worked together to ensure that everyone had a great day. The car park was manned by the Scout section, with Lee Hardy and Dean Harding leading the way. They also oversaw the queues in the shops throughout the day. Kathy Smith, ACC Beavers led a team of SAS and others and they face painted their way through hundreds of young people. They also helped young people with a range of crafty projects for them to remember their day at the zoo. Bunty Ridgway and her team who had compiled all the bookings and paperwork for the day greeted everyone at reception and made sure that everyone was prepared for their day out. Thanks to our first aiders too - John, Jane, Clive and Lyn.
So armed with their maps, vouchers for an ice-cream or drink the park was soon busy with the buzz of excited children and adults. The young people all had a specially devised Easter Egg hunt challenge to complete with the added incentive of a creame egg as a prize at the end of the day.
The tigers, gorillas and lions were amongst the favourite animals and one Cub was overheard that the best bit was seeing the gorilla "eat their own poo!". Another thought it was fantastic to see the lions climbing a tall pole to reach the piece of meat.
On Sunday, surrounded by young people, our County Commissioner, Harvey Kennett was presented with his appointment by Deputy Regional Commissioner, Chris Doll. Miles, a Cub from the 15th St. Andrews Dover Pack was presented with his Invicta Award Challenge - a day he will remember for a long time to come.
We also held a celebration to congratulate Ken and Bunty Ridgway who have both been awarded the Bar to the Silver Acorn in this year's St. George's Day Awards. Special cakes had been prepared for them both and it was a great end to the day.
Everyone went home with a creame egg and a specially produced pen to help them remember their day at Howletts.
Our thanks to all the staff at Howletts who were very complimentary about the behaviour of the young people and would be delighted to see you all there again!
A great day - lots of great team working and a great experience for young people and adults.
