Air Camp 2015
Kent Scouts Air Camp took place on the weekend of 13-14th June 2015.
It was a fantastic weekend where 100 Scouts and Explorers descended on Old Hay on the Friday evening to set up camp with a bit of a thunderstorm to help. Once that was over it was into the action.
Seven Squads explored the airfield to make maps and gather the makings of model aeroplanes before late night cocoa.
The next day everyone was straight into the action with rocket launching, power kite flying, archery, shooting and, with a cross wind grounding the microlight, an outing for the blow carts.
In between there was paracord weaving, simulator flying and more model aircraft making (paper and wood). One Old Hay based aircraft did take off and landed not long after but the wind kept flying to a minimum.
Motorised parachutes were on display and in the evening the Camp was treated to some amazing flying by the site owners and friends putting electric and petrol model aircraft through their paces.
After a grand supper (involving second helpings for many - especially of the cakes!) came the Talent competition. We were treated to songs (including the specially written 'Air Camp Song' and 'Goodnight Air Camp'), jokes and a little magic with contributions from all groups.
The wind had died on Sunday but as other aircraft were unable to fly in with the low cloud flying was limited to the Scouts own Microlight. Despite that there were over 50 flights with an equal number of smiles.
At the close of Camp the winners of the Squad competition was announced as Oscar Squad who all went away with a unique Pegasus cap. Still lots of smiles and a group photo with many going away determined to do it all again next year.
Big thanks to all the helpers and leaders for a huge effort. Thinking hard about how we can make Kent Air Camp 2016 go one better!
