Our annual St. George's Day event was held this year at the Royal Marines Memorial Bandstand on Walmer Green. Fantastic turnout from adults and young people. Local mayors and dignitaries in attendance. Collection raised £350 for Theo's Mission to Walk fund.

Tunbridge Wells Scouts celebrate in style

Over 800 Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers and their leaders gathered together on Sunday to celebrate St George's Day – the patron saint of scouting.

The celebrations started with a trip on the Spa Valley Railway from Tunbridge Wells to High Ricks, where the excited youngsters made the short walk to the campsite for an afternoon of fun and adventure.

There were many activities ranging from the more traditional fire lighting to taking on the Wipe Out challenge. Many of the scouts also took the opportunity to come face to face with a crocodile and handle a snake, whilst other activities included go karting, abseiling, archery, zip wires swing boats and so much more.

Towards the end of the day everyone gathered together to celebrate the success of young people and adults. With several presentations being made including a Queens Scout Award- the top award available to young people in Scouting, and the first in Tunbridge Wells for 15 years to Tom Underdown, and a 70 year adult service award presented to the District President Phil Pollard.

Speaking after the event District Commissioner for Royal Tunbridge Wells Scouts Brian Hobden reflected “this has been an amazing day, Scouting provides so much for young people. Today was all about fun and adventure, but there’s more to it than pure fun. Scouting provides Skills for life along side the fun and adventure.

“Today we were celebrating St George and the courage and bravery he showed to overcome the dragon. None of our members had to overcome dragons today, but standing at the top of the abseiling tower at the age of 6 and having the courage to trust the rope and walk down a wall from 20ft high is an amazing achievement.”

Brian went on to say “of course none of this would be possible without the support of adult volunteers. Our volunteers are not superheroes, they are normal people who enjoy having fun and giving young people opportunities to succeed. There are opportunities for everyone to get involved from a couple of hours a year to helping most weeks, from working directly with young people to working behind the scenes helping with the money and record keeping for example. I’ve heard scouting described as the best unpaid job in the world, and I would not disagree with that”

The last word however should go to a young person and this is an email received from a Beaver mum "I really can't thank you enough for the most amazing day... Sam has had the best day ever. He's exhausted, hungry and very very happy!! Thank you for looking after them ....... and giving his words... "the best day ever that I'll remember forever!"
