Beaver Scouts Quex African Challenge
On Sunday 20th September 2009, 900 Beaver Scouts and 350 adults flooded into Quex Park and The Powell Cotton House and Museum for an action packed day full of adventure!
The aim of the event was for the Beavers to taste lots of different activities and work towards gaining The Global Challenge and Hikes Away Badge.
We had three groups of Beavers and they all had the chance to go on a hike through the wonderful park land and follow the tiger tails. The challenge was to look for various items and appreciate the world around them! Their pockets were stuffed full of conkers by the time they had finished and there was great excitement when they found some baby frogs! We think the Beavers must have run all the way as they were back in record time!
The garden was a hive of activities! There were nature studies, mapping. tent pitching, African drumming, campfire workshops, panning for gold, archaeology, recycling, archery, cross bows, a rope bridge , crafts, country code, face painting, giant games, football, cricket and bouncy hoppers! These bases were run by volunteers from the Explorer Section, Scout Active Support members and Leaders from all section a grand toll of around 90 people!
The Falconry display was a massive hit with Beavers and adults alike!
Keith and his staff in the museum were amazing! They told the girls and boys all about the adventures the Powell Cotton family achieved during their trips to Africa during the last century. They listened to stories and saw the wonderful display of wild animals and artefacts in the museum.
Water aid was our chosen charity for fund raising for the Global Challenge. Volunteers from the charity were able to tell the Beavers about the importance of clean drinking water and show them how important it is to wash your hands before you eat. The Beaver Scouts and their Leaders did us proud by donating £386 in small change and presented Water Aid with a giant cheque. Well done to everyone!
